Areas of volunteer involvement

Thank you for considering volunteering with Cancer Council SA. This is a brief outline of the 12 areas where help will always be welcomed.



1. Administrative Support
  • General office support like telephoning, filing and photocopying
  • Computing – word processing, data entry, spreadsheets
  • Processing and receipting of donations
  • Internet research
2. Transport Service
 
Volunteers provide a transport service for guests staying in Cancer Council SA accommodation facilities.The transport service operates 5 days per week transporting guests to treatment centres within Adelaide.

3. Resources and Information
 
Volunteers provide information on resources and services in The Royal Adelaide Hospital Radiotherapy Centre. Volunteers can also assist in navigating the Cancer Council SA website or directing people to a nurse counselor via the Cancer Council Helpline.
 
4. Retail Sales
 
Volunteers assist and contribute to the day-to-day activities of the shop, which consists primarily of the sale of merchandise.
 
5. Consumer Participation

Volunteers have the opportunity to contribute to decision making, priority setting, planning and delivering Cancer Council activities. An example of this is joining a working party to develop, implement or evaluate a project.
 
6. Packing Teams

Volunteers are regularly required to put together and/or compile the following:
  • Resource kits for doctors and other health professionals
  • Letters to donors and supporters
  • Fundraising Merchandise
7. Event Administration

This supports our events and typically operates between March and November and may include:

  • Organising returned merchandise
  • Stocktaking
  • Reconciling orders/sales
  • Specific data entry
  • Specific packing tasks
  • Telephone work
8. Peer Support
  • Cancer Connect
    In this program, newly diagnosed cancer patients are matched with a trained volunteer who has successfully survived the same cancer. This is a confidential service that offers support and information.

    : Should direct patient services and contact be your priority interest, we suggest you contact the volunteer co-ordinator or social worker at your local hospital/hospice

  • Friendly Visiting Program
    Volunteers provide friendly support to guests and carers staying at Greenhill, Seaview, and Flinders Lodge through practical assistance, and social support in the form of friendly visiting, companionship and information about support services.

  • Social and Recreational activities
    Volunteers provide friendly support to guests through recreational activities at Greenhill Lodge such as cooking classes, special events, art classes and any other recreational activity.

  • Program Leader
    Delivering a self management program for people affected by cancer, working in partnership with another volunteer. As leader, the role is to assist participants to recognise their strengths, and enhance their self-efficacy.

9. Branch Participation


Branch members are involved in fundraising; publicity and public relations activities; information distribution and other special projects in their local community. 

10. Corporate Volunteering

Corporate organisations have the opportunity to volunteer one day per year, assisting with event administration or roles that utilise their specific skills.

11. Community Fundraising and Special Events

Each year, we receive a significant contribution from community-led events such as dinners, head shaves, collection tins, golf days, quiz nights and a wide range of other fun activities.

Individuals and groups use their own creativity, ideas, talent and initiative to raise money to help create a cancer-free future. Cancer Council SA needs to approve these events and is able to provide guidance and support.
