Say no to the Rudolf Nose
The Cancer Council SA is warning parents to ensure their children’s noses don’t look like Rudolf’s at this year’s Christmas Pageant.
The Cancer Council SA SunSmart Coordinator Jo Rayner said very high UV radiation levels were expected on Saturday and posed a significant risk of skin damage for all pageant-goers, particularly children.
“We encourage parents and children to make sure they have full sun protection at this year’s pageant,” Ms Rayner said. “That includes slipping on clothing that covers as much skin as possible, slopping on SPF30+ sunscreen and reapplying every two hours, slapping on a hat, seeking shade and sliding on a pair of sunnies.”
Ms Rayner said the ultraviolet radiation was likely to reach alert levels as early as 9am, resulting in damage to unprotected skin. “By the time the pageant finishes at about 11.30 am, most people will have been outdoors for several hours during the time of peak UV radiation,” Ms Rayner said. “Unprotected skin can burn in as little as 15 minutes, particularly children’s delicate skin which can be irreparably damaged in a very short time. “Heat or temperature is not an indication of UV radiation levels, which can be high even on cloudy or cooler days.” Melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer amongst people under the age of 25. About 600 South Australians are diagnosed with the deadly form of skin cancer each year, another 25,000 develop non-melanoma skin cancers.
