Don’t be a clown at the pageant – cover up!
Pageant goers are being warned to cover up tomorrow despite the cooler forecast, as the UV alert will be extreme and children with unprotected skin will be at significant risk of getting burnt.
Cancer Council SA SunSmart Coordinator, Joanne Rayner said that by the time the pageant finishes, children will have been exposed to UV radiation for several hours. “The majority of people burn when the temperature is below 27 degrees, so people need to be aware that even if it is cloudy or cool it is still extremely important to be SunSmart," she said. The UV is likely to be at the most extreme over the middle of the day but at skin damaging levels from as early as 9 am. Anyone going to the pageant needs to take the following steps to protect against sunburn: - Slip on cover up clothing to protect the arms and legs - Slop on SPF 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen and reapply regularly during the morning - Slap on a shady hat that protects the face, neck and ears - Seek shade whenever possible - Slide on some wraparound sunglasses to protect the eyes. “Children’s young and delicate skin is at particularly high risk of sun damage and parents need to be vigilant in protecting their children's skin. Children need to establish SunSmart practices from an early age to protect themselves from potentially deadly skin cancer later in life,” said Ms Rayner.
